G8 Faslane 3

5.07.2005

On Monday 4th of July, Scottish CND, Trident Ploughshares, the Faslane Peace Camp and friends celebrated one of their biggest success in the struggle against the Nuclear Weapons of Mass Destruction in Britain yet:

They closed down the Faslane Submarine Base near Helensburgh, north of Glasgow for a day - with hardly any arrests and a holiday for the workers.

On a sunny day, the victory of Non Violent Direct Action came at last for the campaigners.

Starting at about 6am till after 6pm in the evening, peace campaigners inspired each other in one big party to keep on protesting against the threat of Nuclear Weapons - wherever they might be,and in whatever form.
The most worrying problem were the midges and the tiredness.

Many peace protesters were getting up earlier than 3 or 4 am to catch the buses in time for blockading the workers morning shift entering the base.

People were falling asleep on the street whilst blockading the north gate, the police was incredibly friendly and seemed more to observe each other than the protesters.

The weather was quite hot, so some people spontaneoulsy decided to add some water based actions to the road blockades.

It was an incredibly positive experience and a total victory.

What a chilled friendly atmosphere!

But not the night before when the police piled up at the entrance of the Faslane Peace Camp.
After they found out there weren't thousands of protesters staying at the camp, but about 50, they soon left.

Many of the hundreds of people just came with buses in the morning at about 8 am, sat on the street waiting to be carried away, which never happenend and left then with their buses at about 4 pm.

However, what a nice hippy-esque atmosphere!
Faslane Peace Camp cooked incredibly good food and disappeared into the masses of bloackaders in the afternoon when the masses of visitors became a bit too much for them, and enabled a small Indymedia Centre to go ahead in one of the caravans.
Several sound systems were there, too, including many participants of the bicycle caravan.
