J B Spray Building Occupied / Evicted / Reoccupied

Section 6 @ Spray building
Spray Building

On the evening of Wednesday 28th June a group of young, homeless, socially minded individuals occupied the J B Spray building at 10 Short Hill in Radford (just off Forest Road West). Built in 1870 the historic lace mill, a grade 2 listed building, has sat empty for years while the owner apparently seeks community uses for the property. Unwilling to see such a beautiful building left to rot this inspired group is seeking to answer both their own need for housing and the wider community need to reclaim spaces like these as social spaces to share and bring people together.

Subvertising on Church Road Bristol

Car subvert Bristol

Jun 30 2006

This bit of subvertising appeared overnight on Church Road. Many of the billboards in this area are for big posh cars; it's good to see that somebody is making the connection between these metal monsters and the state of the planet...

Christian-based direct action gathering, 27-29 July 06, Leeds

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you. (James 5:1-6)

Matilda the Departure

Matilda goodbye

Predictably YF failed to turn up to repossess "their" building

The energy seemed to have flowed out of the Matilda collective and the will to resist had gone. We were ordered to be out by 9 on Tuesday morning and like the polite people we are we invited Yorkshire forward down to accept possession of "their" building. The press turned up in anticipation of a bit of amusement but neither YF or their representatives nor the council who had also been invited, showed their faces. It was rather a sorry showing and the great project begun in the heat of G8 resistance rather fizzled out on a grey Tuesday morning.

Faslane Peace Camp - End of an Era

Faslane Peace Camp, situated outside the gates of the Faslane Naval Base and its Trident nuclear submarines, has been a permanent protest camp since 1982, but is now to close down. The decision was made last weekend during the 24th birthday gathering, with closure planned for 25th birthday in June 2007. Activists reckon that the static camp is no longer the best tactic – mainly because of police surveillance and problems with residents - with plans to move towards a range of actions, some open, some not, linking up with the broader movement of other anti-authoritarian and peace groups. But the process of clearing the site, and discussing how to move forward will take the following year. The first event will be a clean-up bonfire on June 23rd, and then an ‘Independence From The Peace Camp’ weekend of clearing with discussions over the weekend of July 1-4th 2006. This will all culminate in a 25th birthday weekend gathering of tatting down and organising from June 9th 2007.

Rossport Solidarity Camp Gathering

Rossport morning circle

On the weekend of the 2nd to 5th of June the gorgeous weather enabled one hundred and fifty people to enjoy the beach location and stunning landscape of the gathering at Rossport Solidarity Camp. Many people took pleasure in being able to cool off in the sea. The gathering was well attended by interested individuals and groups from all over the country, Cork, Dublin, Mayo, Westmeath, Roscommon, Galway, Derry, as well as people from Britain. Workshops were inspirationally opened by one from Jose Sagarnaga from the Bolivia Solidarity Campaign and successfully linked global struggles and stories of success from other cultures with the campaign to defend Erris from Shell. The issue of privatisation of natural resources was discussed and debated in a forum which was addressed both by Jose and by Maura Harrington of Shell to Sea.

Titnore protest at Taylor Woodrow

SUPPORTERS of the Titnore Woods tree protest camp in Worthing have taken their battle to one of the property developers behind the controversial West Durrington scheme.

A delegation visited the Crawley offices of Taylor Woodrow on Friday June 16, unfurling a banner declaring "Hands Off Titnore Woods!" outside the Brighton Road offices of the construction firm, which is jointly planning the 875-home estate together with Heron Land Management and Persimmon Homes.
