Under the shadow of Drax power station, the Camp for Climate Action has been bursting into life this week. This totally unprecedented project has involved hundreds of people from across the UK coming together to take action against the causes of climate change.

More than 100 climate activist spent all Wednesday night secretly erecting a two-storey tripod (to resist any potential eviction) and marquees in the shadow of Drax power station. In the event, it was hours before the police arrived. The situation with the police is calm. Help is needed to realise the full potential of the first camp for climate action.

Sparkbrook Social Centre Occupation Approaches Seventh Week

The Sparkbrook community centre neglected by Birmingham council, known as the "Cottage of Content", is approaching its seventh week of occupation, with encouraging progress and community participation increasing.

Brum Social Centre Occupation Seeks to Bring Abandoned Building Back to Community Use

A community and social centre in Sparkbrook, closed and designated for auction by Birmingham city council has been taken over by a local collective, with plans to put it back to community use.

Prior to its abandonment the “Cottage of Content�, as it has come to be called, was used as a local youth group, offered English lessons, adult education and served as a Yemeni cultural centre. However in May 2005, after no public consultation, the city council boarded up the property and declared the building “surplus�.

Tip for climbing fences

Many activists get arrested cutting through military fences and so get the extra charge of 'malicious mischief'. Using a ladder to climb fences is impracticable as you tend to get intercepted and charged for approaching a base with a ladder. You can buy 'telescopic-ladders' but they are very expensive so here is the cheapo solution.

SOCIAL CENTRES NETWORK MEETING AT THE CLIMATE CAMP 28TH AUGUST (DATE TBC - might be tuesday)

After a first, packed meeting in January in Leeds at the Common Place Social Centre, there is an opportunity for those involved in social centres to meet again at this years climate camp in august - to share stories, experiences, skills, strengthen the network and organise for the future. There are now about 20 radical, self managed social spaces across the UK and the number grows!

Birmingham Camp for Climate Action Meeting - Friday 4th August

Meeting on Friday 4th August for anyone interested in attending the Camp for Climate Action in Leeds/Megawatt Valley (Aug 26th - Sep 4th). .
